“Writer-director-star Charles Lane honors the traditions of silent-film comedy, especially of the wistful Chaplin sort.”– The Village Voice

“His frames create a wild spontaneity that can morph from riveting to fun to tense and alien in the space of a half-block, making Sidewalk Stories as emblematic a New York film as there is.” – Slant Magazine

“You might never have heard of it, but thanks to this rediscovery, restoration and rerelease, that’ll never be the case again.” – The L Magazine

NEW YORK, NY – OCTOBER 6, 2014 – Carlotta Films and Kino Lorber are proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of the landmark independent film Sidewalk Stories, directed by and starring Charles Lane, and also starring Nicole Alysia and Sandye Wilson. Inspired by the silent comedies of Chaplin and Lloyd, and new cinema véritéapproaches to independent filmmaking, Charles Lane creates a unique and unforgettable modern silent film about a young street artist who befriends an orphan girl. Originally released in 1989, Sidewalk Stories was presented at the Cannes Film Festival, where

it was awarded the Prix du Publique, and in 2013 was an Official Selection of the Tribeca Film Festival. The release marks the first time that the film has been available on Blu-ray or DVD in the US.Sidewalk Stories comes to Blu-ray and DVD in a new 2k digital restoration on October 7, 2014, with a SRP of $29.95 for the Blu-ray and $24.95 for the DVD. The disc comes packed with special features including an audio commentary with director Charles Lane and composer Marc Marder; Vibrations (28 minutes), an exclusive interview about the making of the film with Charles Lane and Marc Marder; “A Place in Time” (1977, B&W, 34 mins.), a short film by Charles Lane that initiated the project of Sidewalk Stories; and the 2013 trailer.

SYNOPSIS: A young artist living in New York, on the fringes of the financial district

and its rushing crowds, tries to make a living sketching passerby on the street. He survives on meager pay and finds refuge in an abandoned building. One night, in a back alley, he finds a little girl whose father has just been murdered. While struggling to take care of her, he meets a young rich woman who immediately falls in love with this awkward duo…Twenty years before The Artist,Sidewalk Stories portrayed the friendship of a tramp and a child, in a moving and funny homage to Chaplin’s The Kid. Both witty and tender, Charles Lane’s gorgeous black and white comedy pays tribute to the silent film era and captures the daily life of the homeless population of New York with a cinema vérité approach reminiscent of Lionel Rogosin’s On the Bowery, Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, and John Singleton’sBoyz ‘n the Hood. Available for the first time on Blu-ray in a stunning new 2k digital restoration!
