Available June 18 on DVD, Blu-ray combo pack and digital download, Jack the Giant Slayer is perfect for those who love their classic literature to leap from the pages in a colossal way. Brought to audiences by the Warner Brothers team, Jack the Giant Slayer tells the epic tale of a farm boy named Jack (Nicholas Hoult) who, in an effort to save a princess (Eleanor Tomlinson), takes on a band of giants. Gallantly, Jack fights to save the princess’ kingdom, accessible to the giants when a handful of magic beans allow them to return to the land below their sky realm, along with the leader of the king’s army (Ewan McGreggor) and his men.
Directed by famed film director Bryan Singer, Jack the Giant Slayer won’t disappoint kids, especially boys and for the most part, has a good deal to keep their parents engaged too, more than one might expect from a bedtime story, and it runs a smooth and even pace. Its commendable cast and amusing and imaginative script, co-written by Christopher McQuarrie and Singer, make it a fun family film. I am giving it a grade of B-. While it played a bit too long for the younger kiddos, the elder grandchild (age 8) loved it! Click here for full Laurie’s full theatrical release review.
