Film Review: Don’t Hesitate to see “Deadpool 2” as part of your Summer Blockbuster Experience

The highly anticipated arrival of the sequel to 2016’s “Deadpool,” arrives approximately two years and three months later, simply titled “Deadpool 2” with a script by returning screenwriters, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (with the help of Ryan Reynolds). David Leitch (“Atomic Blonde”) takes the helm as the director of “Deadpool 2” and Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson/Deadpool.
For those fans of “Deadpool,” they will find that “Deadpool 2” is really “out there” for how far the filmmakers pushed the limits from the first film. The action is constant, as well as the humor that is so rapid-fire, some of the comedy may be missed! Overall, fans should be ready to anticipate quite a ride with all of the characters. One of the best additions to this story is a young mutant, Russell Collins (Julian Dennison, “Hunt for the Wilder People”) who calls himself Firefist. Dennison’s performance is superb as the teen with fire at his disposal and a great ability for delivery of quick comebacks written for him in the script. There are many new characters, with varied personalities and plenty of humor written in for them that makes this film one not to be missed this summer.
Wade Wilson’s love interest, Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin), returns as they continue their loving and quirky relationship, with plans for a future, but in this sequel, Wade faces a personal tragedy that kicks him into high gear. “Deadpool 2” characters include Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and her girlfriend Yukio (Shiori Kutsuna) who try to train and assist him as he taking his life in a different direction.
There is a time-traveling mutant, Cable (Josh Brolin) who appears as if he is about to destroy the world in his path, yet soon the viewer discovers his mission. Wade’s journey is not a solo one after he decides to assemble a team of his own: Weasel (T.J. Miller), Dopinder (Karan Soni), Domino (Zazie Beetz), Bedlam (Terry Crews), Shatterstar (Lewis Tan), Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgård), and the non-mutant, Peter (Rob Delaney). I can’t spoil the story about these characters. Just go watch it!
To be clear, the sequel is not all gags and punch lines, but has fantastic action sequences and drama. Director David Leitch adds to this film his experience as a stuntman, writer and stunt coordinator that adds plenty to the sequel’s action sequences to keep the audience engaged throughout. Some fans may note the sequel to be even more violent than the first film, which helps the film earn its R rating.
“Deadpool 2” officially arrives in U.S. theaters May 18th, although some theaters will provide some Thursday evening show times on May 17th. It runs 119 minutes and is rated R for strong violence and language throughout, sexual references and brief drug material.
