Review: LIFE OF THE PARTY

By Renee’ C.

Rating: 2.5 (Out of 5 Reels)

After Deanna’s (Melissa McCarthy) husband (Matt Walsh) abruptly asks for a divorce, a middle-aged mother returns to college in order to complete her degree (IMDB).

Deanna is the typical middle aged mother devoted to her daughter and husband. As her daughter heads off to college she realizes that her life is about to dramatically change. I have enjoyed some of McCarthy’s previous films but this one is a hard pill to swallow. Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone going back to finish their education. I myself took several years to complete mine because I worked full time and paid my own way. The problem here is that the humor is predictable and not really funny. McCarthy has created some interesting characters in her previous films my all-time favorite McCarthy film is SPY. I loved Susan Cooper in SPY because she transformed herself from a person working at a desk to a field agent.

I am definitely not the target audience for this film and am sure the much younger crowd and those young at heart will enjoy this film. Unfortunately, this one was not my cup of tea. I knew within the first couple of minutes into this film that is was not going to be one I was going to enjoy because I am not the target audience. Let the youngsters go see this one as a Saturday matinee.
