Review: MARY POPPINS RETURNS

By Renee’ C.

Rating: 4.5 (Out of 5 Reels)

Decades after her original visit, the magical nanny, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) returns to help the Banks siblings (Anabel (Pixie Davies), John (Nathanael Saleh) and Georgie (Joel Dawson)) and Michael’s (Ben Whishaw) children through a difficult time in their lives (IMDB).

I for one loved the first Mary Poppins film decades ago and I was definitely looking forward to seeing this film. For sure, Julie Andrews is spectacular in the first film but Blunt is equally spectacular. I have seen Blunt in a myriad of films over the years but definitely in nothing like this and she absolutely nailed this performance. The children actors in this film are great as well because they draw viewers, young and old, into their plight. Another great selection was in casting Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack because he is not only a great actor but an outstanding singer as well. Which is no surprise because of his long running Broadway show Hamilton which he starred in for quite a long time.

The special effects in this film are equally spectacular because as we all know Disney spares no expense and it definitely shows. The costumes are fantastic and there is a great mix between live action and animated characters.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the songs in this film because they are some of the best I have ever witnessed in a film. The songs are expertly interwoven throughout the film and the actors seamlessly move from dialogue to singing without a hitch. The lyrics are a continuation of the dialogue and add immensely to the overall feel and storytelling of this film.

This film is a wonderful ride from beginning to end and should definitely be seen this holiday season, especially on the big screen.
