Review: MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS

Rating: 3 (Out of 5 Reels)

Mary Stuart’s (Saoirse Ronan) attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), Queen of England, finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution (IMDB).

I love period pieces in general because it is fascinating to see how peopled lived a long time ago. I have also seen several films from the Elizabethan era and did enjoy this film overall. It is refreshing to see this story told from Stuart’s point of view because most are not.

Ronan and Robbie give wonderful performances in their respective roles and I found it gut wrenching to see the angst between them even though all they truly wanted was to co-exist amicably. Unfortunately, that did not happen because of the staunch religious beliefs of the time.

I often wish that Queen Elizabeth’s wardrobe had survived the great fire in London because they would be a wonderful thing to see because she spared no expense getting them made and I am sure they were outstanding.

This film is well made and the costumes are spectacular but I would recommend attending a matinee.
