Review: RULES DON’T APPLY

By Renee’ Collins

Rating: 1.5 (Out of 5 Reels)

An unconventional love story of an aspiring actress (Lily Collins), her determined driver (Alden Ehrenreich), and the eccentric billionaire (Warren Beatty) who they work for (IMDB).

This film is well made and acted but the problem is some, including this film critic, will find Howard Hughes (Beatty) behavior towards others so offensive they really don’t care what happens to him. Sure, there are some great actors here but even they cannot bring this film out of the depths of weirdness because it is not funny or romantic on any level. Looking at this from a clinical perspective it is reasonable to assume that Hughes upbringing and mental status are the cause of his unorthodox behavior but no one is able to help him see the error of his ways.

The additional main characters, Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), an aspiring businessman/assistant and Marla Mabrey (Collins), an aspiring actress try to bring another romantic dimension to this film but fall short because of their behavior. Most will find this film a huge ego boosting act for Beatty because some will not appreciate his view of Hughes be it true or false.
