Review: SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe (IMDB).

Writer/Director Boots Riley freshman work is an extremely well made film. Sure, it does get weird at the end but this is a solidly written and well-acted film. The characters are real and they draw you into their plight. You can’t help but fall in love with Cassius because he is real and just trying to make a living which can be difficult depending upon a person’s resources and background. Struggling artist girlfriend, Detroit (Tessa Thompson), is extremely passionate and thoughtful who ultimately becomes a mirror to the hypocrisy of Cassius’ actions while working as a telemarketer. I was also surprised to see Armie Hammer as Steve Lift, the owner of the multi-million-dollar telemarketing company where everyone works. He is quirky and funny but only interested in himself and his company.

This film is funny and entertaining. If you are looking for something different and quirky then this is the film for you. Although, I would recommend catching a matinee.
