Review: THE CHOICE

By Liz Lopez

Rating: B-

Nicholas Sparks’ The Choice is now a feature film and in theaters now. Although some people may consider some of the Sparks stories as predictable romance films, I think it is a well made film with excellent performances by Benjamin Walker and Teresa Palmer. I cannot say I agree with how some scenes were edited in the latter part of the film and how it feels a bit rushed. It is not so bad to keep me from recommending the film overall. Ultimately, fans of the Sparks’ books and films will be flocking to the theater to view it, especially in time for the upcoming Valentine’s Day.

The film is directed by Ross Katz and the screenplay is by Bryan Sipe, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. Additional cast members include Maggie Grace, Alexandra Daddario, Tom Welling, Brett Rice, and Tom Wilkinson, and the veteran actor always provides a great performance in all films he is a part of. This one is very good as he portrays a veterinarian.

Synopsis: Travis Shaw (Walker) and Gabby Holland (Palmer) first meet as neighbors in a small coastal town and end up pursuing a relationship that neither could have foreseen.  Spanning a decade and tracing the evolution of a love affair that is ultimately tested by life’s most defining events, this story features a memorable ensemble of friends and family in Sparks’ beloved North Carolina setting, culminating in the question that every couple must ask themselves:  how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?
