Review: THE GENTLEMEN

A British drug lord (Matthew McConaughey) tries to sell off his highly profitable empire to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires (IMDB).

McConaughey as Mickey Pearson is genus because his portrayal is cool, calculated and nuanced. There is not doubt of his sincerity in his role as the drug lord ruling the roost. Fortunately, Ritchie chose a great group of actors who to the depth and richness of this film. Charlie Hunnam as Ray, Colin Farrell as Coach, Henry Golding as Dry Eye, Hugh Grant as Fletcher and Eddie Marsan as Big Dave who give excellent performances aided by the absolutely outstanding writing allows them to play off each other brilliantly.

I love the way in which Ritchie moves back and forth within the timeline of the story all while moving things forward and keeping the audience completely engaged. I for one am glad director Guy Ritchie returns to his early filmmaking roots making this film. It reminded me of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels from 1998 and Snatch from 2000. While these other films mentioned are great I actually enjoyed this one even better. This is a must-see film if you are a fan of this genre. It is a fun and engaging ride from beginning to end.
