SXSW 2021 Music News: THE DOMINICAN ARTIST THE CHANGE PERFORMS AT THE FESTIVAL

By Liz Lopez

The first music showcase I viewed and heard virtually at the 2021 SXSW Music Festival in March was presented by SeitrackUS. Among the acts was The Change, who performed both the songs “Imperio” and “Ojitos”. The Dominican singer-songwriter and producer best known for her viral hit “Imperio” presents the visual piece that accompanies this track. Recently, the song was selected for Dolce and Gabbana’s 2021 Spring/Summer Collection campaign featuring actor Alejandro Speitzer.

“Imperio”, a song that quickly and organically surpasses 8 million streams across digital platforms, now has an official video clip recorded in Los Angeles, CA and under the direction of Jon Saw. In addition to writing this track, The Change is also credited as the director and editor of the video.

In the midst of breathtaking natural beauty, we see two girls freely expressing their mutual love as The Change performs from the top of a mountain and appears in several shots surrounded by nature. The scenery of this video complements the message behind this song: A sincere, true and innocent love. With a simple production and recorded entirely on her cellphone, “Imperio” (The Change’s second single) has captivated audiences around the world. All three of her singles have been recorded entirely from her cell phone.

Her stage name “The Change” comes from her last name “Cambiaso.” After spending difficult moments of loneliness, The Change decided to find a purpose and transform her life. The idea of becoming a musician became more a lifestyle.

Her other singles: “Báilame” (her first single in 2018) was inspired by endless party nights and has more than 4.3M streams on Spotify. “Hora Loca” (3rd single) was her first music video as a director and editor and has more than 2.9M of streams on Spotify.

The Change participated in the SXSW Festival (2021) alongside internationally known artists Kinky, Ximena Sariñana (who I have seen perform live at prior SXSW Music Festivals), as well as DLD, and Mariana Bo.
