2013 SXSW Review: HEY BARTENDER

By Mark Saldana

Rating: 4 (Out of 4 Stars)

I watched my first documentary of SXSW Film 2013 very early, courtesy of a screener.  Writer/director Douglas Tirola educates his audience on the history of bartending and mixology, and showcases some modern masters of the art/science, as well as highlighting a simple bartender/bar owner who, in his struggles to keep his doors open, hopes to learn the secrets to success.

I really enjoyed this film, and after watching it, I would love to visit all of the bars showcased here.  These people truly are artists who take much pride in their work and product.  When in my twenties, I don’t know how many times in bars and clubs that I have been disgusted or disappointed with the drinks served by bartenders rapidly throwing together various liquids. The mixologists in this film represent a movement which is the antithesis of those atrocious experiences.  These people desire to wow their customers, not only with showmanship, but with beverages that please the palate.
