Fantastic Fest 2021: THIS IS GWAR

Rating: 3.5 (Out of 4 Stars)

What began as a science-fiction inspired art project developed into a heavy metal culture phenomenon. This documentary details the journey of several creative and rebellious minds who contributed to the theatrical and sometimes controversial metal band known as GWAR. Director Scott Barber tells the true, but strange story of a wild and subversive band that not only earned themselves a massive and adoring following, but also fueled the fears of anyone who lacked their vision and, let’s face it, their sense of humor.

At this year’s Fantastic Fest, I had the pleasure of watching two enjoyable and compelling music documentaries, and this was the first of such. My only memories and experiences of t he band were through their appearances on television talk shows (such as the Jerry Springer Show), and a couple of music videos I had seen on MTV. This limited amount of knowledge of GWAR certainly had an impact on me, and had already galvanized a desire to attend a GWAR concert.

Scott Barber’s documentary offers much insight into the real people and their impressive talents that made GWAR a force to be reckoned with in the heavy metal world and celebrates it all. I absolutely enjoyed this music documentary and marveled at the impact the band has had on pop culture. The film features interviews with several celebrities, some of whom are well respected for their talents as actors, comedians, filmmakers, and musicians. GWAR is definitely a phenomenon that is not for everyone, but as this movie proves, their influence and impact are undeniable.
