The adventures of an orphaned boy (Oakes Fegley) named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon (IMDB).
This film reviewer is old enough to vaguely remember the original from 1977. However, these two films should only be compared by name alone. The original was a kitschy, tongue and cheek type of film that had Helen Ready singing songs. This film is grittier and much closer to real life not only in the acting but with forty years of advancement in visual technology Elliot is as realistic as can be which adds to the overall experience of this film.
The characters here have depth which is why this film should not be compared to the original. Having a greatly written character allows Fegley to portray Pete with heart that draws the viewer in from the opening scenes.
This film is one of the rare exceptions of a remake because it is actually better than the original. Disney should expect this film to become an instant classic loved by children of all ages.
