2013 SXSW Review: YOU’RE NEXT

Rating: 4 (Out of 4 Stars)

Ever since this movie made a huge impact at the 2011 Fantastic Fest, I had wanted to see this film so badly. Several friends and colleagues raved about this thriller, but lots of time passed and nothing had been announced regarding any kind of theatrical or video release.  So I made it priority to see this movie when it was added to SXSW film lineup this year.  This had to be the perfect way to end my film festival.  Despite being exhausted from the week behind me, I drank some coffee and attended this “Midnighter” to close out SXSW 2013 and I am so ecstatic that I did.

One fateful weekend, the Davison family holds a wedding anniversary celebration. During the first dinner, a group of masked assailants attacks and succeeds in killing some of the party guests.  Feeling helpless and trapped in their home, the Davisons discover that one of their guests knows just how to handle the attackers.

This film constantly had me on the edge of my seat with my eyes glued to the screen. Written by Simon Barrett and directed by Adam Wingard, this movie blew me away. It delivers chills, thrills, action, excitement and some lovely twists and surprises.  You’re Next stars Sharni Vinson (Erin), Joe Swanberg (Drake), Ti West (Tariq), Barbara Crampton (Aubrey), Rob Moran (Paul), AJ Bowen (Crispian) and others.  Everyone in the cast performs beautifully. I thoroughly enjoyed this intense and potent picture and cannot wait to share it with others.
