The Serie Project continues with the monthly Speaker Series featuring local Austin artists from the print collection at Coronado Studio that continues monthly through May 2019. Artists who have created work for the Serie Project serigraphy print collection established by the late Sam Coronado participate in monthly informal community conversations regarding their history and experiences with art, including serigraphy.
On Friday, February 8th, 2019 Liliana Wilson will be the featured artist. The Speaker Series will be held from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at Coronado Studio, 901 Vargas Rd.
Born in Valparaíso, Chile, she studied law at the Catholic University of Valparaiso, Chile. In 1977, she visited the United States and subsequently settled in Austin, Texas. She studied drawing at Austin Community College, and painting at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She has exhibited throughout the United States Mexico and Italy.
Artist Statement – “My images come from the subconscious. Many of the figures I create appear in ‘other-world’ environments: their outward composure in direct contrast to their inner turmoil. Realities collide on multiple levels as beauty emanates from the subjects.”
“Often my compositions represent single moments in the lives of individuals that serve as metaphors for those lives. Recently my work has shifted to incorporate spiritual aspects of the universe and its surrounding beauty as necessary components of our human experience.”
She recently exhibited her work at the East Austin Studio Tour (November 2018); “El Sur Existe: Chilean printmaking” (August 2018) and OESTE 3: A Latino Collective Exhibit during the West Austin Studio Tour (May 2018), as well as “Petals for the Dead” a Día de los Muertos Altares and Collective Exhibition at La Pena Gallery on South Congress.
“OFRENDA: A Retrospective of Liliana Wilson’s Art” was a part of her 2015 book release tour at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center (San Antonio). The exhibit featured many works highlighted in “Ofrenda: Liliana Wilson’s Art of Dissidence and Dreams” published in December 2014. This covers some of Wilson’s most representative works accompanied by biographical background and essays by many respected scholars and artists such as Marjorie Agosín, Gloria Anzaldúa, Norma E. Cantú (Editor), Antonia Castañeda, Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Guisela Latorre, Laura E. Pérez, Lourdes Pérez, Ricardo Romo, Patricia Ruiz-Healy, Kay Turner, George Vargas, and Liliana Wilson herself.
After the Q&A with the artist, there will be a reception and music by Paula Maya from 7:30pm-8:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.
